How to Find the Perfect Original Painting for Your Home: The Art of Connection and Collecting

There’s something truly magical about witnessing someone connect with your artwork for the first time. As an artist, I’m always deeply touched when someone chooses to bring one of my pieces into their home. Since I began marketing my work more intentionally in early 2024, I’ve sold seventeen original paintings to collectors all over the world. And every time it happens; I feel that same spark of gratitude and wonder.

What helped me get here? Learning what my audience wanted—what truly resonated with them—was key to moving from creating art for myself to creating art that others wanted to live with.

But while I’ve been selling originals, I’ve also been doing a bit of collecting myself.

In fact, over the past year, I’ve collected from six different artists.

It was always a dream of mine to fill my walls with original art—pieces that told stories, carried energy, and made me feel something. As I began building my personal collection, I started to understand what kind of art I truly connect with. I noticed a pattern in the works I was drawn to, and I had a big realization:

I wasn’t just buying the artwork—I was connecting with the artist behind it.

That personal connection made all the difference.

So… how do you find the perfect original painting for your home?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But here are a few guiding questions to ask yourself:

  • Is it about connection? Does the piece evoke something in you? Do you relate to the artist’s story, or the emotions behind the work?

  • Is it an investment? Are you hoping the artwork will gain value over time? Are you looking for pieces that will become part of a long-term collection?

  • Is it about design? Are you looking for a piece that complements your space, your aesthetic, or your interior design goals?

The truth is: it can be all of those things.

There are so many aspects to collecting art—emotional, financial, aesthetic—and yet, it remains a deeply personal (and sometimes even controversial) subject.

To be a collector is to be a part of something bigger. You’re supporting artists and giving them the opportunity to keep creating. You’re saying “yes” to beauty, to meaning, to story, to soul.

Woman holds a colorful painting depicting a heart with branching veins, set against a brick wall and wooden beams. She appears content.

And it doesn’t have to be a huge financial leap. Sometimes it's simply about what you can afford at the time—about choosing a piece that speaks to you right now. There’s beauty in that too.

My Advice? Follow What Moves You.

Whether you’re just starting your art collection,

or you’ve been collecting for years, remember that there’s no wrong way to bring original art into your home.

If it speaks to you, if it brings life to your space, if it reminds you of who you are or who you’re becoming—then it’s the right piece.

Original artwork has a way of transforming a space and reflecting the soul of the person who lives there. And if you're someone who’s ever thought about collecting but hasn’t taken the leap yet, maybe this is your sign.

Let yourself fall in love with a painting. Ask questions. Get to know the artist. See how the piece feels in your heart—not just how it looks on the wall.

Because in the end, collecting art is less about trends and more about truth.
